Upsherin invitation wording

An Upsherin or opsheren invitation marks a child’s third birthday and first haircut. Keep the wording warm, with a clear place and time for guests.

Include the child and the gathering

Start with the child’s name and explain that the invitation is for the Upsherin. Add the hosts, weekday and date, starting time and complete address. If only certain relatives are invited to a meal, keep that information distinct.

A simple English starting point

With gratitude to Hashem, please join us for the Upsherin of our dear son [name] as he reaches his third birthday. [Weekday and date], at [time], [venue and address]. We look forward to celebrating with you. The Friedman Family.

Choose your family’s wording

Families use different spellings, including Upsherin, Upshern and Opsheren, and may call the celebration an אפשערן or חלאקה. Use the wording your guests recognize. There is no need to crowd several alternative names into one invitation.

Check the location and the design

If the gathering is in a home, add an apartment or entrance detail. A decorative scissors motif can identify the occasion, while a simple heading keeps the invitation clear. Check long names and mixed Hebrew and English text in the final preview.
